Stage Acting vs. Film Acting

Although it may not appear so, stage acting is very different from film acting. Since one is a live performance and the other is not, there are certain techniques that have to be used with one rather than the other.

Theatre vs. Film is an important distinction to make as an actor. For starters when performing live theatre the performer has weeks to prepare a character while a performer who is on camera only has a few hours before they shoot a scene to prepare for the character. Live performances however; involve a live audience so the actors must get everything right on the first try because there is no time to redo it. Film actors are allowed multiple times to do something if needed. Special effects are put to better use on film than in theatre but again any and all special effects on stage must work the first time. All makeup and body language must be bigger while onstage while...

Theatre Etiquette

Every theatre buff may not be auditioning. Some may be perfectly content with attending a theatrical production as a spectator and that is perfectly fine. There are certain behaviors and manners that are expected to be observed when attending a theatre production and it is important to be aware of and observe them before entering the theatre in order to avoid evil stares from the surrounding audience members.

Broadway Productions

Broadway shows are expensive and considered to be some of the best theatre to be performed. When attending one of these shows, even though there may not be a set dress code, it is not advised to enter a broadway theatre in shorts and flip flops. When attending one of these types of shows, it is best to dress up. Wearing some slacks or khakis and a nice shirt would suffice, but it is always nice to put a little effort into what is worn. Other good etiquette...

Proper Auditioning Procedures

Auditioning is a nerve racking experience for anyone involved but it is an important and inevitable process for the working actor. How well one performs at an audition can make or break the chances of being cast in a particular role or even determine if one gets cast in the production at all.

Types of Auditions

There are different types of auditions there are musical auditions in which the auditioner may be required to perform a dance number and or sing and act, there are pure dance auditions and then there are straight acting auditions in which the auditionee may be allowed to review the script ahead of time and perform or they may be required to perform a cold read in which they are not allowed adequate time to prepare.

Preparation

If the script is available and accessible before the audition is to take place, it is a good idea to get familiar with the story so that the...

Finding a Good Monologue

When an aspiring or a working actor or actress goes to their audition. It is important to be aware of the types of monologues are best for the type of role that they are submitting for. It is important that if the role is dramatic that the one auditioning choose a dramatic monologue to audition with. The same is true with comedy or any other genre because it will be important for the casting director to see the individual in the same type of role that they are auditioning for.

When auditioning for a play, chances are that the director will require everyone to read from the script during the audition. Other auditions, such as for talent shows or during acting classes or anything that is not for a designated show you will be asked to prepare your own monologue. The Hours (2002) by David Hare

Virginia: Why Mr. Woolf, what an unexpected pleasure. You were working in the garden, I didn’t wish to disturb you. I went for a walk.
I’ve endured this custody. I’ve endured this imprisonment. I am attended by doctors. Everywhere. I am attended by doctors who inform me of my own interests. They do not speak for my interests. My life has been stolen from me. I’m living in a town I have no wish to live in. I’m living a life I have no wish to live. How did this happen? It is time for us to move back to London. I miss London. I miss London life. I’m dying in this town.
I wrestle alone in the dark, in the deep dark, and only I can know. Only I can understand my own condition. You live with the threat you tell me, you live with the...

Anybody know what this place is? This is Gettysburg. This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we’re still fighting amongst ourselves today. This green field right here was painted red, bubbling with the blood of young boys. Smoke and hot lead pouring right through their bodies. Listen to their souls, man. I killed my brother with malice in my heart. Hatred destroyed my family. You listen and take a lesson from the dead. If we don’t come together right now, on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed just like they were. … I don’t care if you don’t like each other, but you will respect each other. I don’t know, maybe we’ll learn to play this game like...
